Location: Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
This study required comprehensive analysis of the main historic shopping street in Dun Laoghaire, identifying the unique character of the area and demonstrating how to achieve a sustainable regeneration strategy for the Town Centre. Dun Laoghaire is at the heart of the Dublin Bay area’s huge economic expansion, but its historic main shopping street is under threat from competing modern centres, erosion of original architecture, small sized retail units, vehicle movement and parking problems.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council commissioned CAP to undertake a comprehensive appraisal and characterisation of the whole street. Meetings were held with local traders and others who identified particular concerns. Topics studied included strategic issues, the public realm, protected buildings, shopfronts, restoring lost features, enforcement, design of new buildings, negative influences, special projects, development and enhancement opportunities.
