Galway Historic Towns
Competition winning project to undertake architectural appraisals and characterisations of Athenry, Portumna, Loughrea, Gort, Tuam and Clifden, in order to designate the County's first Architectural Conservation Areas and protect historic buildings within them. Conservation Plan evaluation techniques were used in the evaluation of buildings, the vulnerabiity of towns and policy development.
The aims of the project were: to define boundaries of Architectural Conservation Areas; recommend buildings of architectural historic interest for inclusion in the Irish Record of Protected Structures (listing); advance popular awareness of and participation in architectural heritage conservation; establish and implement policies and practical conservation measures; and integrate policies with planned development, economic regeneration, urban design and other elements of Local Development Plans (LDPs). All the studies have been adopted without amendment and included in the LDPs.
