Down Lodge, Wandsworth
A derelict 18th century listed mansion, on a site covered by old workshop buildings with an overgrown wasteland section several meters below formed the challenging context for this rescue and enabling scheme. The house had suffered from serious water penetration, separation of the 19th century bays from the main structure, an ugly rear extension and other defects which required extensive conservation and engineering solutions.
We converted the house into 6 flats retaining all principal rooms and features, restored all its external features and created a new rear facade using evidence of 1890 photographs and the building itself. A campus-like setting was created for the 5 new blocks in harmonious style, the whole development totaling 40 units. Bellway Homes built and sold all units off plan. Architect: Jack Warshaw
