Location: Whitehall, London
Won in competition for the Department of the Environment and Department of National Heritage, to coordinate conservation and enhancements for government departments. It embraces research, analysis, commissioning specialist advisors, consultations with government departments, English Heritage, Royal Parks, Parliamentary Works and others. We advised on public realm design, presentation, access, circulation, tourism, parking and matters such as cleaning of buildings, statues and street, flood and security lighting. Spaces studied included Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square, Embankment Gardens, Horse Guard Parade, St James' Park and Victoria Embankment, and the archaeology of historic spaces such as The Privy Gardens of the ancient Palace of Whitehall. Our reports and recommendations formed a background to the later World Squares study.
